Symptoms that may need a root canal
- Severe or throbbing pain, especially at night.
- Sensitivity to cold or heat that lingers after the trigger is removed.
- Swelling, an abscess or a βpimpleβ on the gum.
- A tooth that darkens after a knock.
The treatment steps
- Local anaesthesia and isolation of the tooth.
- Opening the tooth, removing the pulp, cleaning and shaping the canals.
- Disinfecting the canals and filling them with a special material.
- A final filling β and usually a crown to protect the tooth from fracture.
After treatment
Some tenderness when biting for two to three days is normal. Avoid heavy chewing on the tooth until the final filling or crown is placed.

Frequently asked questions
Does root canal treatment hurt?
With modern anaesthesia it is usually no more uncomfortable than a regular filling; the real pain comes from the inflammation before treatment.
Why do I need a crown after a root canal?
A root-treated tooth becomes more brittle, especially molars, and a crown protects it from breaking.
Is it better to extract the tooth instead?
Keeping your natural tooth is usually better; an extraction leaves a gap that needs replacing with an implant or a bridge.
