When is a zirconia crown needed?

The crown process

  1. Examination, X-rays and choice of shade and shape (sometimes with digital smile design).
  2. Tooth preparation (light reduction), a digital or conventional impression, and a temporary crown.
  3. The crown is made in the lab, tried in, then permanently cemented.

Zirconia, veneers or porcelain?

Zirconia: the strongest option, suitable for front and back teeth. Veneers: a thin layer on the front surface only, with less reduction — ideal for healthy teeth to change shade and shape. Porcelain-fused-to-metal: strong, but a dark line can appear at the gum over time.

Frequently asked questions

How long do zirconia crowns last?
Usually 10–15 years or more with good care and regular check-ups.
Does a crown damage the tooth?
Preparation removes part of the tooth surface to make room for the crown; your dentist preserves as much as possible, and veneers need even less reduction.
Does zirconia change colour?
No — zirconia is colour-stable and does not stain from coffee or tea like natural teeth.
How many teeth do I need for a Hollywood smile?
It depends on the width of your smile — usually 8–10 upper teeth; your dentist decides after the examination and smile design.
