🪥 Teeth cleaning & gum treatment
Tartar (calculus) is hardened plaque that a toothbrush cannot remove; it causes gum inflammation, bleeding and bad breath. Regular cleaning protects the gums and the bone around your teeth.

Signs of gum disease
- Bleeding when brushing or eating.
- Red, swollen gums.
- Persistent bad breath.
- Receding gums or loose teeth in advanced cases.
Regular cleaning vs deep cleaning
Regular cleaning (scaling and polishing): removing tartar above the gumline. Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing): removing tartar and bacteria below the gumline inside the pockets — may need local anaesthesia and more than one visit.
Care at home
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss or use interdental brushes daily.
- Quitting smoking greatly improves gum health.

Frequently asked questions
Does scaling damage enamel?
No — scaling only removes tartar and does not harm enamel; the feeling of gaps afterwards comes from removing tartar that was covering them.
Why do my gums bleed?
The most common cause is gum inflammation from tartar and plaque, which usually improves after cleaning and good daily care.
How often should I have my teeth cleaned?
Every 6 months for most people, and more often (every 3–4 months) for people with gum disease.
