Does the injection hurt? Overcoming your fear of the dentist
Fear of the needle is a big reason people postpone treatment. Modern anaesthesia is far more comfortable than most people expect.
๐ฌ One of our patients' most common questions
How we make the injection more comfortable
- A topical numbing gel before the injection.
- Fine needles and slow injection.
- Waiting until the anaesthetic has fully worked before starting.
How long does it last?
Usually 1โ3 hours for the tooth, while the lips can stay numb longer. Don't eat until the numbness wears off so you don't bite your cheek or tongue โ especially children.
Tell your dentist about
Heart disease and blood pressure, pregnancy, allergies to any medicine, and the medicines you take โ so the right anaesthetic and dose can be chosen.
Tips for dental anxiety
- Tell your dentist you are anxious โ we will give you time and explain every step.
- Agree on a hand signal to stop.
- Start with a simple check-up visit.
