☀️ Fitzpatrick Skin Type Test
4 quick questions give your estimated skin type with sun and treatment advice.
The six skin types
| Type | Description | Sun |
|---|---|---|
| I | Very fair — always burns, never tans | Highest risk of sunburn and skin cancer: SPF 50+ daily and avoid midday sun. |
| II | Fair — burns easily, tans minimally | SPF 50 daily, reapply every 2 hours in the sun. |
| III | Light olive — sometimes burns, tans gradually | SPF 30–50 daily; melasma and spots can appear with sun and hormones. |
| IV | Olive / light brown — rarely burns, tans easily | SPF 30–50 daily; a tinted sunscreen with visible-light protection helps melasma. |
| V | Brown — very rarely burns, tans very easily | Sun causes pigmentation more than burns; daily tinted sunscreen matters. |
| VI | Dark brown to black — never burns | Low burn risk, but pigmentation and raised scars (keloids) are more common. |

Frequently asked questions
What is the Fitzpatrick scale?
A classification of skin types I–VI by how skin reacts to sun (burning and tanning), used to choose sunscreen, lasers and peels.
Which skin types are most common in the Arab world?
Mostly types III, IV and V, which are more prone to melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation than to burns.
Why does skin type matter before laser?
Darker skin has more melanin that absorbs laser energy, so the wrong device or settings can cause pigmentation or burns — a doctor's assessment is essential.
