🪥 How Much Toothpaste for My Child?

The right amount protects against decay and reduces swallowing.

Summary of recommendations

AgeAmountFluoride
First tooth – under 3A smear (rice-grain size)1000 ppm or more
3 – 6 yearsA pea-sized amount1000 ppm or more
7 years +Pea-sized or a short strip1350 – 1500 ppm

📝 Why does the amount change with age?

Young children can’t spit well and swallow part of the toothpaste. So the amount is very small before age 3 (a rice-grain smear), then pea-sized from 3 to 6. The concentration itself (at least 1000 ppm) is what protects against decay — don’t use fluoride-free children’s toothpaste unless a dentist advises it.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child start using fluoride toothpaste?
From the first tooth, using a very small amount (a rice-grain smear), as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Dental Association (ADA).
Is fluoride safe for children?
Yes, in the recommended amounts. The small age-appropriate amount protects against decay and lowers the risk of swallowing too much.
What if my child swallows the toothpaste?
Occasionally swallowing a rice-grain or pea-sized amount usually causes no harm. Keep the tube out of reach, and if your child swallows a large amount contact a doctor or poison centre.
What does ppm on the tube mean?
It is the fluoride concentration in parts per million. Children’s toothpastes are usually 1000 ppm and adult toothpastes 1350 – 1500 ppm.
